WASA Webinar: Robust by Design: Wastewater Treatment with Pond-Based Systems

Date and Time
- UTC+2
Location

Online

Join the sixth edition of the WASA Webinar Series, hosted by WaReNam, to explore robust and resource-efficient approaches to wastewater treatment and reuse, with a particular focus on pond-based systems and their potential for agricultural water reuse.

In water-scarce regions, reliable wastewater treatment is essential not only for protecting human health and the environment, but also for making better use of limited water resources. Pond-based treatment systems offer a simple and potentially robust solution, particularly where land is available and technical and operational resources are limited. At the same time, existing pond systems can be upgraded and optimized to improve treatment performance and enable the safe reuse of treated wastewater, for example in irrigated agriculture.

The first talk will introduce how wastewater ponds work and present an approach to improve treatment performance for the reuse of treated wastewater in irrigation agriculture. The second talk will present stepwise options for upgrading pond systems, ranging from enhanced BOD and nutrient removal to the integration of trickling filters.

Agenda

  • Welcome & speaker introductions
  • Academic presentation: “From Treatment to Reuse: Improving Wastewater Ponds for Crop Irrigation in Namibia” | Andrea Friebe, Research Associate at the Department of Water and Environmental Biotechnology, Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany
  • Private sector perspective: “Robust by Design: Wastewater Treatment with Pond-Based Systems” | Michael Müller, Head of Operations, FUCHS Enprotec GmbH, Germany
  • Moderated Q&A & discussion
  • Wrap-up & announcement of next webinar

Speakers

Andrea Friebe, MSc

Research Associate at the Department of Water and Environmental Biotechnology, Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany

Since completing her Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering (M.Sc.) in 2022, she has been working at the department of Water and Environmental Biotechnology at the Technical University of Darmstadt. Her research focuses on wastewater treatment technologies for agricultural and industrial reuse, water reuse scenarios that fit the local conditions and needs of Namibia, identification of suitable combinations of technologies that remove COD and ensure hygienically safe effluent while retaining nutrients when irrigation is intended, and trickling filter systems. She has been involved in the WaReNam research project since its initial phase.

ppa. Dr. Michael Müller

Head of Operations, FUCHS Enprotec GmbH, Germany

Michael Müller is Head of Operations at FUCHS Enprotec GmbH, a German engineering company delivering water and wastewater treatment solutions worldwide. He focuses on biofilm, sedimentation and pond-based technologies. Müller is driven by the conviction that reliable, robust water treatment improves quality of life and protects the environment.
