Innovative Technologies to Improve Water Security
Integrated into the WaterNet Summer School Programme
Target group: WASA PhD Students
The WASA Summer School 2025, entitled “Innovative Technologies to Improve Water Security”, will take place from 23 to 27 October 2025 and is fully embedded within the established WaterNet Summer School. The programme is specifically designed for PhD students involved in the WASA research programme and aims to strengthen academic capacity in water-related research and practice across Southern Africa and Germany.
This training initiative will provide a balanced mix of lectures, hands-on exercises, field excursions, and scientific exchange, fostering interdisciplinary knowledge and collaboration among young researchers.

Programme Structure
- Three days of lectures and applied practical sessions
- One day of field excursion
- Half a day dedicated to student presentations and the formal closing of the summer school
Core Topics:
- Day 1: Applied Hydrological Modelling
- Day 2: Innovations in Water Reuse, Water and Mining, Urban Water Systems, and Groundwater Exploration
- Day 3: Forecasting Techniques to Support Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM)
Please note that the draft programme is subject to change depending on the availability of lecturers and facilities.
Participation
Participation is open to all WASA PhD students. There is no participation fee for the summer school or the associated WaterNet Symposium, but places are limited. Support in identifying affordable accommodation will be provided where needed.
Financial Support for African WASA PhD Students
WASANet will provide full financial support to one African PhD student per WASA project. This support includes international or domestic travel, accommodation, symposium registration fees, and a daily allowance. Participation in the WaterNet Symposium, including presentation in the WASA Special Session, is a requirement for all funded students.
Application Procedure
Interested WASA PhD students are required to submit the following documents by 8 August 2025 to Dr. Joerg Helmschrot (WASANet):
- A brief letter of motivation
- A reference letter from their academic supervisor
- The title/topic of their planned presentation for the WASA Special Session
Selection will be conducted by a committee established through WASANet. All successful applicants will be notified by 15 August 2025.
26th WaterNet/WARFSA/GWPSA Symposium
The 26th WaterNet/WARFSA/GWP-SA Symposium will be held virtually/online and in Lusaka Zambia, 29 – 31 October 2025 under the theme, Accelerating Implementation of Integrated Water Resources Management in order to Close the Water Investment Gap by 2030 and Beyond in Southern & Eastern Africa. The Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation, Republic of Zambia is the lead host.
