The Water Security in Africa (WASA) research programme officially launches its main phase with a comprehensive three-day kick-off conference in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Over 100 experts from Southern Africa and Germany will come together to address critical water security challenges.
What to Expect:
- Day 1 (September 25):
The conference opens with registration and internal project meetings for the various research teams, followed by an evening reception to facilitate networking among participants. - Day 2 (September 26):
The day begins with an official welcome by high-ranking officials from the South African Department of Water and Sanitation and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. A keynote presentation on water security will set the tone for the day, followed by a series of project presentations in three key areas:- Hydrological Forecasts and Management of Hydrological Extremes
- Water Infrastructure and Water Technology
- Sustainable Water Resources Management
- Day 3 (September 27):
The final day will feature reports from the working groups, presentations from industry partners, and the formation of task forces on cross-cutting topics like water governance, digitalization, and groundwater management. The conference will conclude with a plenary discussion and closing remarks.
The WASA conference provides a unique platform for researchers, policymakers, industry experts, and intergovernmental organizations to collaborate on solutions for water security in Southern Africa.
