    The Water Security in Africa (WASA) research programme officially launches its main phase with a comprehensive three-day kick-off conference in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Over 100 experts from Southern Africa and Germany will come together to address critical water security challenges.

    What to Expect:

    • Day 1 (September 25):
      The conference opens with registration and internal project meetings for the various research teams, followed by an evening reception to facilitate networking among participants.
    • Day 2 (September 26):
      The day begins with an official welcome by high-ranking officials from the South African Department of Water and Sanitation and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. A keynote presentation on water security will set the tone for the day, followed by a series of project presentations in three key areas:
      1. Hydrological Forecasts and Management of Hydrological Extremes
      2. Water Infrastructure and Water Technology
      3. Sustainable Water Resources Management
      Each session will feature collaborative presentations by African and German researchers, highlighting their work on projects such as hydrometeorological information systems, water reuse strategies, and mining-impacted water management. The afternoon will see participants break into thematic working groups focusing on decision support, technical innovation, and capacity building.
    • Day 3 (September 27):
      The final day will feature reports from the working groups, presentations from industry partners, and the formation of task forces on cross-cutting topics like water governance, digitalization, and groundwater management. The conference will conclude with a plenary discussion and closing remarks.

    The WASA conference provides a unique platform for researchers, policymakers, industry experts, and intergovernmental organizations to collaborate on solutions for water security in Southern Africa.
